Resolution Otherwise known as definition, this measure of sharpness and clarity gives the binocular its ability to distinguish fine detail. A larger objective lens will deliver more detail than a smaller one and will, therefore, exhibit better resolution and more intense color. Resolution also depends upon other internal and external factors, such as lens and optical quality, environment and optical alignment or optical system.
Light Transmission Both the size of the objective lens and the type of lens coating influence the amount of light that reaches the eye. Light transmission refers to the efficiency of an optical system or its ability to deliver the maximum amount of light to the eye. As with resolution, a larger objective lens will allow for greater brightness and sharpness of image than a smaller lens. | |
Roof Prism System The hallmark of the Roof Prism system is an objective lens aligned directly with the eyepiece. The prisms are positioned one over the other. The result is a more compact, streamlined shape that allows compact binoculars to have full-size power capabilities.
Porro Prism System With the Porro Prism system, the objective lens is offset from the eyepiece through the use of two right-angle Porro Prisms. Generally, Porro Prism systems offer a wider field of view and provide greater depth perception than roof prisms. |
